      <image:title>History - Our History</image:title>
<image:caption>On March 12th, 1877 in London, Ontario, Canada, a small group of Irish born and others of Irish descent from different religions and politics organized The Irish Benevolent Society. Its purpose was, and remains, to provide opportunities for members and their friends to engage in benevolent activities and to preserve their Irish heritage. Item 17 of the Society’s Constitution and By-laws is a good example of one of the unique features of this organization: At the election of officers it has been a rule of the Irish Benevolent Society and shall so continue that Presidents shall be alternately Protestant and Catholic.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Hardy - James T. (Jim) Hardy – Honourary Life Member</image:title>
<image:caption>Jim Hardy traces his Irish roots through both sides of his family. His mother Mary Geary was born in Cappoquin, County Waterford, where her father James owned a pub. She immigrated to Chicago in 1914where she joined members of her extended family. His father Joe initially came to Canada in 1922, then went (illegally) to Chicago in 1924 and adopted the original family name, Hearty. Jim's grandfather Tom,originally from County Monaghan, was a police officer in England and had anglicized the name to Hardy. Jim's parents met and married in Chicago where his brother, Father Joe Hardy, was born. Jim was born in England (reluctantly) after the family went there to visit family and was unable to return due to World War II. The family immigrated to London (Ontario) after the war and Jim attended St Patrick's Elementary School, De La Salle High School and Catholic Central High School.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Patrick Heffernan - Patrick Heffernan</image:title>
<image:caption>Patrick Heffernan, emigrated from Ireland to Canada on July 31st, 1980 with his wife Lillian and their two sons – Ronan and Neil. Patrick and Lillian had wanted to create a better life in Canada for their young family and Patrick wanted to fulfill his ambition of working full time as an Interior Designer. They settled in London, Ontario - as they had family living in the city - and have been here ever since! Patrick joined the Irish Benevolent Society around 1990 after being encouraged to do so by a friend - Larry Heffernan. Larry and Patrick knew each other through the old Irish Club and Larry was a big supporter of developing our Irish culture in London and promoting Irish dancing in particular. The IBS was a much less formal organization back then and Patrick remembers attending ad hoc meetings at such places as the Knights of Columbus and the Shriners to discuss St. Patrick’s Day events. Patrick became President of the Irish Benevolent Society in 2004 and it is important to point out two integral parts of his legacy during his term as President were allowing women to join the organization for the first time and developing the initial website. Patrick is very involved with the logistics of the annual St. Patrick’s Day luncheon. In fact, he has been driving force behind setting up the room for the lunch and taking everything down every year since the late 1990s. As you can appreciate this has been a huge commitment and a massive endeavour each and every year on his part and he has no plans on giving it up! With the exception of one year, he has also been the MC of the St. Patrick’s Day event since around 2000 and the luncheon benefits every year from his sense of humour and his determination to keep everything on schedule! It is a great honour to install Patrick James Heffernan, as an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Irish Benevolent Society. Congratulations Patrick.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Charles Corbett - Charles P. Corbett – Honourary Life Member</image:title>
<image:caption>This is clearly ONE of those situations which may not repeat itself for some years. Charlie was an outstanding Member of the Irish Benevolent Society over a 30 year period and was on the Board of Directors most of that time. He became President after four years and was then Treasurer for many years. He was a LEADER who contributed his time, energy and money to the Society and convinced others to do the same. He was on numerous Committees over the years, sold more tickets to the annual luncheon than anyone else, brought in more Members than anyone else and inspired his family and friends to do the same. Charlie was the "Wayne Gretzy" of the Irish Benevolent Society and while there are many other good Members, no one was as great as him. Charles passed away Feb 4, 2022.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Celtic Irish American Academy is an international summer school for American, Canadian, European and Irish high school students. Our aim is to enrich and strengthen Irish connections in young people and to help guide them into becoming future global leaders and changemakers. The Irish Benevolent Society, with support of the London Irish Canadian Cultural Society and Nothers The Award Store, is proud to once again sponsor three local high school students to attend the Celtic Irish American Academy in Galway, Ireland. Families are required to pay the airfare cost and spending money, all other expenses are covered. This is more than a trip — it’s a life-shaping experience. Last year, we sent three students, and every one of them returned with glowing stories: stories of new friendships, deeper confidence, pride in their heritage, and a whole new perspective on the world. Parents noticed the change. The students felt it themselves.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Academy offers teens a unique blend of: Irish culture, history, and identity Leadership and personal growth Independence, confidence, and global awareness Friendships that stretch far beyond the summer For many, it’s their first time travelling internationally without family — and for some, their first real connection to Ireland. The result? Young people who come home more self-assured, inspired, and excited about what’s possible for their future. If you have a teenager — or know one — who’s curious, open-minded, and ready for an adventure they’ll talk about for years, this opportunity is for them. We encourage all our members and readers to start the conversation at home. Sometimes all it takes is planting the seed .</image:caption>
